The Special Income & Expenses Report Of My 3 Year Anniversary
Notice anything different about me?
Like, maybe I lost a couple inches somewhere. I wish I was talking about my waistline, but I’m really just talking about my hair. I cut my hair.
What’s up, guys? Welcome back to my channel, Today’s is super special because I am celebrating my three year blogging anniversary on my blog Adversary.
If you want to get super creative, I started my blog, And it’s kind of crazy to kind of look back at all of the content that I’ve created and, you know, the way that my business has really molded and evolved over time.
It’s been such an incredible journey for me. Not an easy one, but definitely one that has been so worthwhile being able to work at home and support my family financially, but then also really have that one on one time with my young son has just been an incredible blessing.
And I could not be more thankful for, you know what? What you guys have given me with your support and being able to to do this to be a blogger. So I asked you guys on social media what it is you wanted to see to really celebrate this three year mark.
Did you want to see a an income and expenses report or did you want to see, you know, a video about things that I have learned? And I was actually really surprised at the results on the income and expense report.
Did win out in the end, but it was actually a lot closer than I thought it would be. So I think over the next couple weeks,
If you’ve been following me for a while, you already know that I actually don’t do income and expense reports. I just kind of create my content in different ways. And my husband and I are more private people.
If you are looking around on my site for income and expense reports for every single month. I don’t do them. I really only do them if it’s like a special occasion.
So I will leave the expense reports that I’ve done in the past. I talked about the first two hundred dollars I ever made with blogging back in 2015. I’ll leave that linked up above.
And then I had also done a very special income and expenses report last fall at some point, and I will leave that linked up above.
but this is what I earned in March of 2018. So what I’ve done here is I’ve just broken down my overall income for that month, March 2018, into three different main categories.
You take all the categories of income that I earned and you add them up together. The grand total for income earned in March of 2018 was twelve thousand four hundred and eighty two dollars and eighty one since I was very pleased with that number.
And like I mentioned, I’ve been doing this for three years. So I never want you guys to get the impression that this is something that can happen automatically just because I feel like that’s such a lie and that so many people make it appear like it’s super easy and that super quick and you can do it really easily and just don’t believe in that.
But if you are willing to put in sweat, blood and tears and work consistently and put in, you know, a year, a year and a half of unpaid hours and just like making next to nothing, but you just keep hustling and working on it.
I feel like you can get to that number. And it’s really important to note that if you watch my income and expenses reports or if you watch those of other modern bloggers, bloggers that her posting them recently, you’ll find this trend where blogging income is not what it used to be.
I would say a decade ago. In the old days. In the good old days. Ten years ago, I would say that most bloggers earn their income through ad revenue and affiliate income and sponsorships and things like that. And actually, that’s something that I still adopt to this day.
But myself and many, many other bloggers have really evolved and kind of, I would say, taking a more modern approach to earning money through a blog. And that means not just having content put on their blog and then earning money through ad revenue or just affiliate links and things like that.
We’re really trying to find different ways that we can diversify our income streams to create a more sustainable and stable business.
So a really quick example is if the only way you make money off of your blog is through ad revenue, you are submitting yourself to, you know, being beholden to fluctuations throughout the year in trends and things like that.
So if you are a craft and hobby blogger and you have a Christmas craft that is popular, you are obviously going to make more money from ad revenue during the holidays when people are visiting your site for that particular craft.
And then obviously, once Christmas is over, your ad revenue will go back down as that traffic goes back down. That’s the kind of luxury nation that you don’t really want to be beholden to when you’re.
To make income on a consistent basis with a very consistent number, you know, you don’t want to make a ton this month and then only a little next month and then a ton this month and only a little next month. You want to try to create something that’s a bit more even throughout the year.
And that’s what I’ve done here by having so many different income streams. So it gets really sticky. And people sometimes don’t like to hear that I sell products and that I make money in other ways because they feel like, well, that’s not true.
Blogging, I would argue and say that blogging has changed and evolved so much over the years that blogging is not just about creating content and then hoping you make enough money off of your Google ads.
Blogging is about creating a brand and providing value in some way, teaching people or inspiring people with in some way. On your site or through your videos. And then monetizing that brand and creating an actual blogging business. It’s not just the blog anymore.
It’s the whole package that you offer as a blogger and as a blogger. Here’s how I make my money. So the first section I have here is under affiliate income. So I partner with a lot of different companies.
So like this income as Amazon affiliates or in March in particular, I was an affiliate for a subscription box, or if I’m an affiliate for my hosting or any other service or product that I use and love and also recommend to others if they purchase through my link, I get a small commission from the company at no additional expense to my readers.
So the affiliate income that I had for the month of March of 2018 was one thousand five hundred and ninety two dollars and 12 cents. The next category is product sales.
Now I have a lot of different products that I sell sometimes, or some of them I sell throughout the entire year. Some of them, I only open the doors once a year or a couple times a year. Excuse me.
I have just found that to create something that brings in a more consistent, even stream of revenue every single month, it is better for me to have multiple products.
And I’m very fortunate in the sense that, you know, I have a lot of information and content that I want to share with you guys and that I can, you know, create these products for these different stages of the blogging or the business that you are in.
So the grand total of products sales that I earned in March of 2018 was nine thousand three hundred twenty two dollars and 14 cents. I feel very, very lucky to have that number. But hint secret here.
It has been years and years of hard work and preparing my platform and preparing my brand and preparing these products and testing them with beta testers and things like that to finally get to that amount. So this is not something that happens overnight.
They obviously have been doing this for three years and I have been working consistently at it during all that time.
So fortunately, I’m very happy with that number. And it’s if you looked at my income and expenses report from last fall, which I’ll leave linked up above, that number has gone up for product sales.
And I’m very fortunate with that. But I’ve just been hustling, hustlin, hustling. Every time I turn around, I’m just constantly working and trying to get my brand name out there and establish my authority and things like that.
And so that’s why I think I’ve been able to create something that’s a bit more consistent. So the last category that we have here for income is the ad income. So anytime you see an ad on my videos or anytime you see an ad on my Web site, that is the revenue that’s coming in for that ad that came in and a grand total of one thousand five hundred and seventy eight dollars and fifty five cents. I never want you guys to feel like these income and expense reports.
And I think that’s partially why I’m so hesitant to do them as well. I’m in addition to kind of maintaining some of that privacy for my husband and I. But I just never wanted to come across as icky in any way.
And so I always kind of hem and hon and am so hesitant to to publish these. But at the same time, I know that when I started blogging, I found them so inspirational and in the sense that they gave me a lot of ideas of exactly how bloggers make their money and like the revenue streams that they have.
So when somebody says, yes, I make five grand a month blogging, I want to know how are they doing that? Is it all adds? Is it partially ads and sponsorships and affiliate income? Do they have products?
You know, are they selling different things? Are they coaching or are they freelancers? Like, where’s that money coming from? So that, you know, I can get some ideas for how it is I should be setting up my own blogging business. Now, I’m I’m not a believer that a blogging business is just the blog alone.
It’s it’s not. It’s a blogging. So you’re taking that blog and you’re taking your brand and you’re just creating this amazing package for people where they can learn from you and be inspired by you in so many different ways. OK, so let’s go ahead and talk about the money I spent this month in particular.
I will say that my expenses were a tad low. And in fact, if you looked at any if you looked at the last income and expenses report I had back in the fall of twenty seventeen, my expenses were a bit higher.
And let me explain that. So I have a freelance team, people that I will hire for, you know, certain tasks to help me out with running the blogging business.
And for this month in particular, and in fact, for the past couple months. One of the girls that I hired took some time off.
she’ll be back. So not March of twenty eighteen,
And so the freelance team expense that you see here is not the norm. And I would certainly probably like double or triple it depending on the tasks that I have. So just keep that in mind. OK. But the first expense that I have is the Google Apps expense.
And this is the like Google Suite Apps that I pay for. And it just helps me have like my own email setup properly so that I am hello at Alison Lindström dot com and things like that.
And I have to those that I think I pay for. So the grand total for Google Apps came out to ten dollars and fifty cents. I’m a big spender. And the second thing that I paid for is accounting software.
And actually I have this added deal right now. I’m getting it for like a huge percent off for the time being. This expense will also go up. But for now, it was five dollars and twenty five cents.
That’s probably going to go up to like fifteen bucks a month or something like that. And then my freelance team expense, like I mentioned, it’s a lot lower than it normally is.
So I would say a more realistic picture every single month of this kind of expense would be two or three times what this will be. But the I spent one hundred and fifteen dollars and sixty cents for my freelance team for March of twenty eighteen.
The next expense I had is for me, a payment and landing page software. So I pay for, you know, certain software to create my landing pages and then another software to also collect payments and handle like all of my courses and giving access to students and things like that. And so the grand total for those two things came out to sixty six dollars.
Now my next expense was lower than normal, and that was for Convert Kit, which is the email marketing service that I use and love. By the way, I adore convert it. I will probably never leave them. The grand total for the month of March of twenty eighteen came out to one hundred and nineteen dollars.
That is lower because I actually went in and deleted email subscribe. Every time I say that to anybody who is a blogger or becoming a blogger, they’re like, what you.
So let me let me get this straight. You worked hard to get e-mail subscribers and then you deleted them. Yes.
That makes no sense. but I don’t know that I ever actually published one.
I actually have lessons on it in the blogging business club, which I will link down below if you’re interested in becoming a member.
Anyway, that explains why that cost went down. And then the last expense that I had from March of twenty eighteen was social media schedulers.
And that was actually just covering board booster that came out to twenty dollars. And what I do is I pay for tailwind as well, but I only pay once a year.
So for March of 2018, all I spent was twenty dollars. But in the fall, I will be spending more because I’ll have to pay for the yearly plan for tailwind as well.
so that kind of explains why there is, you know, just bored booster mentioned here. But anyway, to wrap everything up.
The grand total, which I think was really great for March of 2018 for my expenses, was three hundred and thirty six dollars and thirty five cents.
Quick note about the additional expenses that I did not mention. I also have to take out money for taxes. Yep.
I gotta pay them the. That I don’t take out for and I don’t mention here are things like insurance. I’m very fortunate. My husband has incredible health insurance and my son and I are just on his plan.
So that’s actually something I don’t have to worry about, you know, with my business. So I’m very blessed in that category. Thank goodness he has such great insurance.
Am I missing anything else? No, I don’t think so. So essentially, that is it. That is the whole kit and caboodle, the income, the expenses and a bit of the information for the behind the scenes.
it would be two tips. The first one would be if you want to make dependable, consistent income every single month, year after year, and not just money that can cover hobbies on the weekend.
I am talking about money that can pay your bills and actually create create financial stability for you and your family.
It takes time, but if you’re willing to put in that hard work and that time, because a lot of people aren’t, so hopefully you have the work ethic to go ahead and do it, then hopefully you will be able to see the same results.
And I think also in the middle. Gone are the days where it was just kind of you made money from blogging in an old fashioned manner, where it was just ad revenue or it was just affiliate income.
You know, nowadays we see so many bloggers, myself included, with multiple income streams. So we’ve got multiple products.
We’re working with multiple companies or services to have affiliate income. Now, maybe we have multiple ad companies we’re working with.
I’ve got ads on my blog. I’ve got ads on my YouTube channel. I mean, all these different streams of income help create something that’s a bit more dependable.
