Hey, I’m sitting here at my computer and I noticed that I got a few messages from my blogging students telling me that the tutorial for Google’s keyword planner has or is not quite working because Google has changed things.
So if you want to use their Google keyword planner and you don’t want to put in your credit card information, there is a certain process for doing not.
And they seem to change that process on some sort of random schedule. Are they trying to do this to make me lose my mind? TBD, regardless, every time they change things, I update my tutorials because I really want to help you guys figure this out.
And so that you can use the Google keyword planner and uses proper keywords. So without further ado, as of May 2020. This is the updated tutorial on how to use Google’s keyword planner.
If you find this helpful or hey, even if you get frustrated with Google, constantly changing things in this process, hit the like button. And let me know.
So the first thing you’re going to do is use Chrome and I like to use Chrome because I want you to be able to use what they call an Incognito browser.
And Incognito browser, I mean, could put, quite frankly, is really just a browser that doesn’t have any of your history already stored.
And the reason we want to use this is because if you’ve tried to already set this up or you’ve tried to access the Google keyword planner, it will have already stored that information.
And so it might give you a different looking page. And so we just kind of want to say, OK, we’re just starting from scratch and here’s how we want to get signed up.
So what you do is I’m farty got Chrome pulled up here and I’m just going to click these three little dots on the right and then I’m going to click new incognito window.
Ok. So now we’re going to go to the Google keyword planner. I’m just going to pasted in here and I will leave that link down below for you. We’re going to click go to Google keyword planner, and I’m going to go ahead and sign in with my account. It’s just a free Gmail.
So if you don’t have a G.M., you can create a G.M. for free. A G.M. email address is what I mean by that. And so you’ll go ahead and sign in with your account right now.
Now, they will prompt you to create an ads accounts. I’m going to click new Google ads account. If you’re having a difficult time getting past this point, for whatever reason, look for something that uses the words switch to expert mode.
Or perhaps you’re looking for or you’ll see something that says create an account without a campaign. Sometimes when I go through these tutorials, some of these roadblocks pop up and sometimes they don’t. I don’t understand the rhyme or reason behind it.
I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I have different g mails and those different G mails are already using the Google’s keyword planner.
So Google recognizes that I already am in expert mode and I’m already using them. I don’t really understand. I don’t know why, but I do know that sometimes I will get an e-mail from some of my blogging students who have an issue with this.
And so these are some of the different links that you can click to kind of get past a section that is trying to make you create a campaign or trying to have you put in your credit card information. So look for something that says create an account without a campaign, or alternatively, look for something that says switch to expert mode.
And then once you actually have gotten to where you’ve already created an account and now you’re ready to actually look at the Google keyword planner when you you’re logged into that account, you will click on your tools button and you will go ahead and try to choose the keyword planner. And sometimes that won’t pop up.
You’ll just see things that say billing and payments, account access or preferences. And this inside your account is where you will switch to that expert mode.
So I wanted to go ahead and give these examples, because when I was filming this tutorial, these options didn’t pop up for me, which was really confusing because sometimes they pop up for my students.
So I did some research within Google. I got into their support form and I was like, oh, my gosh, someone please help me. I don’t understand what’s going on here.
So I wanted to share these different screenshots for you. That way you can see what it is you should be clicking if for whatever reason, these options pop up for you. Now, let’s head back and you can change your billing country, etc., so forth. I’m going to click submit.
Once that information is correct and then I’m going to click explore your account. Now, I’m gonna head on over to tools and settings, which is up here and right under the planning tab is key word planner.
Yada, yada. It will give some information about how to get started and things like that. And there we go.
So I like to go ahead and discover different keywords and then also get some sort of search volume and forecasts, because I don’t want to just use any sort of keyword.
I want to use really good keywords that are actually being searched for. Otherwise, literally, what’s the point of using it?
Right. So I’m going to click discover new keywords and we’re going to pretend that I am a paleo food bloggers. What I’m going to do, just paleo to see what we got here.
And there are a couple of things to note here. Now they’re going to make the main location here in the U.S., which works for me because that’s where I am.
In addition to the fact that that’s my target audience. So if your target audience is located elsewhere, this is where you would change that language is English search networks. I really just want Google.
I don’t need search partners. And then this is important information. So they’re giving me details on the last 12 months. Now, if I wanted to click that and I wanted the last two years or I wanted the past 10 years, I can go ahead and change that for the sake of this tutorial.
I’m going to go ahead and leave it because I want to use information that’s fairly recent. If you find that the results you’re getting are pretty pitiful, you might go ahead and modify that just to see if perhaps changing the search date will help. OK.
In addition, they’ve also got some different suggestions for you. So I don’t know anything about the paleo diet. You probably do if you’re into paleo eating. And so you would know that it’s a diet plan or a fad diet or a high protein diet or just a healthy diet, low carb diet.
And so this will give you some different keywords that you might go ahead and include. And if you wanted to go ahead and broaden your search, you would just click that and it’ll automatically recalculate the search in for the results here for you.
So what I’m going to do is I’m going to leave it as is. And I’m going to go ahead and sort by average monthly searches.
This is a range. This is not like a be all end all. I don’t want you to use this as like firm hard exact data because they’re going to give you the average. It’s going to be an approximate number. I mean, look at the range is 1000 to 10000. So just keep that in mind. OK?
But it is helpful information to have. The next thing you’re going to want to look at is the competition. I’m less likely to use paleo snacks simply because the competition is really high and someone else is using it. So if I had the choice between this is a good example, caveman diet and paleo diet.
I mean, look at the average monthly searches. This is one hundred K to a million versus the 1000 to ten thousand. So obviously this one wins and then I’m going to look at the competition. So both of them are low. But if, for example, this one said high.
And this one said low, I’d be more inclined. Or this one said low. Pardon me. I’d be more inclined to use caveman diet because I want something that gets a lot of searches. But more than anything. I just don’t want there to be as much competition as a new blogger.
Your focus is not to hit those like high target million searches and high competition. You don’t want that because you are just starting.
So you don’t have the history that Google is looking for as somebody who has an established Web site.
So you have to kind of reach a little bit lower and say, OK, so where is the competition lower and then is it getting a good amount of searches? So we’re going to search for average monthly searches or we’re going to sort by average monthly searches. OK. And then that’s going to kind of sort everything in order for us.
And then something else that you can do is also add a filter. If you are searching for something that needs to exclude adult or inappropriate ideas, you can click that here. I’m just going to click add a filter and then I’m going to click competition.
And then I only want the competition to be low. I almost never reach for anything that’s medium or high because, you know, I’m a smaller blogger compared to others, even though I’ve been blogging for, what, five years now.
I like to just reach for those keywords that have low competition because I’m more likely to rank on that first page and hopefully get that number one ranking on Google.
So I’m going to click apply because I just want to see low competition over here. And now you’ll see that I’ve sorted it by average monthly searches so that I can see it highest to lowest, and then I’m only seeing keywords that have low competition.
So this is very helpful to me because I don’t really want to compete with anybody that has that is using all these big he wears that have high competition.
And if I see Portale Hole 30, it’s getting a thousand to 10000 views or average monthly searches. The competition is low. This is a fabulous blog post idea. For me, it’s something that maybe I didn’t think of.
Paleo food list, paleo diet plan, paleo diet recipes. All of these are great ideas. Vegan paleo recipes, vegetarian paleo recipes. These are all great. When you start to get down to the hundred to 1000 average monthly searches, those are pretty low.
So I would use these as secondary keywords. So I would make sure that I have at least a keyword that has the 1000 to 10000 average monthly searches.
And then if I was going to supplement and I wanted to use will say like 10 or 15 different keywords in one 3000 word blog post, I would use a couple of these and then I would supplement with a couple of these. I would make sure I definitely had these with a higher average monthly searches and then I would toss some of these in here as well.
OK. So that’s kind of how you’re going to use it. Before I wrap this up, this other information over here, like top of page bid and high range, low range, etc., all these dollar amounts here.
This is if you’re going to run a Google ad, OK? And since we’re really just using the Google keyword planner for free, we don’t have to worry about that.
So you can disregard that. If you find that you have a ton of really fabulous ideas, you can go ahead and just click, download down to download, download keyword ideas and you can do a CSP file and keep it on your computer.
Or you can just download it in Google sheets and it will create it in your Google Drive for you. OK, one more thing I want to show you here is if you wanted to take a look at keywords on the off of a particular site, you can click including brand names in click.
Start with a Web site and then you can use a particular page or a particular Web site running with that paleo theme. I’m going to use just a general paleo Web site and I’m going to use Paiste, the Web site in there. And then we’re going to use the entire site. We could use a particular page. I’m just going to use the entire Web site.
And then you’ll click get results. Now, don’t forget, we had changed a little filter, we had added a filter on here to show us just the low competitions, if you wanted to change that, you could.
I’m going to go ahead and simply leave it. And this shows us some of the keywords that they are using in particular. So that gives you some inspiration as well. Please keep in mind, I want to put in a disclaimer here that I do not think it’s a good idea and I never encourage it.
I don’t think you should just copy and paste what everyone else is doing and kind of apply that to your own Web site. First things first. It’s just not very authentic. You know, I want you to think on your own.
You’re a smart person and creative, and you can come up with your own ideas and your blogging business brand. But additionally, it’s also kind of just stealing ideas, which is not fun.
And that’s not really great for your integrity record. Right. So we want to maintain our integrity. We don’t want to steal anything from anybody else. We don’t want to just copy and paste ideas and be considered a blog post idea thief. Right.
We just want to kind of come up with some great ideas. So use this keyword planner as something to spark inspiration, but don’t use it as the be all. End all.
And make sure you’re absolutely not stealing. I have confidence in you that you can come up with your own creative blog posts, ideas to help your blogging business really stand out.
You definitely don’t want to stunt your blogging business growth by just looking like the identical copy cat Web site of somebody else’s Web site. So you don’t want to do that to you because. To yourself.
Because it’s just not good business. So just keep that in mind as you go through using this particular feature. So that’s going to wrap it up for this tutorial, as always.
